The 49ers checked most of the boxes and earned a B-. They will call it conviction in the building and a reach everywhere else: Sam Hartman, 34 picks early at pick 249.
It is not that Phillips is a bad player; it is that the 49ers had louder needs to answer first. The tight end hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Amarius Mims
In the 31st pick they get a cornerstone up front, outstanding value to boot. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick63
Rnd2
Mike Sainristil
They paid sticker price for Mike Sainristil in No. 63, and that is fine. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick94
Rnd3
Zak Zinter
Zak Zinter in Round 3, Pick 31 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick98
Rnd3
Brenden Rice
No edge and no loss on Brenden Rice in pick 98; it is a wash and a sensible one. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick125
Rnd4
Andru Phillips
A curious use of slot 125. Tight end and linebacker needed the pick; a cornerback in Andru Phillips did not.
Pick132
Rnd4
Luke McCaffrey
Value said wait; Luke McCaffrey in pick No. 132 says they were not listening. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick209
Rnd6
Gabe Hall
Gabe Hall in the 209th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick214
Rnd6
Javontae Jean-Baptiste
They went early on Javontae Jean-Baptiste in the 214th pick, and the value did not follow. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick215
Rnd6
Frank Gore Jr.
Frank Gore Jr. at pick No. 215 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick249
Rnd7
Sam Hartman
They talked themselves into Sam Hartman at the Round 7 slot, and the board did not agree. It fills a real need, too.
