FutureB-
A costly weekend of dealing drags the 49ers to a D-. You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The 49ers did exactly that with Theo Johnson in the 63rd pick.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want. Offensive lineman was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, interior defensive lineman very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick17
Rnd1
JC Latham
In the 17th pick they get protection for the quarterback. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick31
Rnd1
Adonai Mitchell
In Round 1, Pick 31 they get a No. 1 receiver at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick48
Rnd2
Payton Wilson
Payton Wilson in pick No. 48 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick63
Rnd2
Theo Johnson
They reached a country mile for Theo Johnson at pick 63, and the board is aghast. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick94
Rnd3
Zak Zinter
A premium they did not need to pay, Zak Zinter a notch or two before his time. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick96
Rnd3
Cole Bishop
Cole Bishop at the 96th overall pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick124
Rnd4
Elijah Jones
Good price on Elijah Jones in Round 4, Pick 24, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick131
Rnd4
Jordan Travis
Jordan Travis at slot 131 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick133
Rnd4
Mohamed Kamara
A straight-up fair deal on Mohamed Kamara at pick No. 133, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick176
Rnd6
Cornelius Johnson
A reach on Cornelius Johnson in No. 176; the board had better options right there. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick211
Rnd6
Keith Randolph Jr.
Keith Randolph Jr. in the 211th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick215
Rnd6
Frank Gore Jr.
A reach for Frank Gore Jr. in the Round 6 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick251
Rnd7
Bub Means
Bub Means at pick 251 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
