Nobody dealt better than the 49ers this weekend: B+. The tape said wait; the 49ers did not. Matthew Jones went at pick No. 215, a good 35 picks before the board was ready. The bottom line is a respectable B+.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. It is not that Mustapha is a bad player; it is that the 49ers had louder needs to answer first. The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
That Means pick is the receipt they will wave around later.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick32
Rnd1
Jackson Powers-Johnson
In pick No. 32 they get a cornerstone up front. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick56
Rnd2
Edgerrin Cooper
A slide stopped in pick 56, with Edgerrin Cooper worth more than the price. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick63
Rnd2
Renardo Green
Renardo Green at slot 63 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick64
Rnd2
T'Vondre Sweat
By-the-book stuff, T'Vondre Sweat at the 64th pick squarely in line with his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick67
Rnd3
Dominick Puni
Dominick Puni at No. 67 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick117
Rnd4
Malik Mustapha
A want over a need in the Round 4 slot: Malik Mustapha adds a safety while quarterback keeps waiting.
Pick129
Rnd4
Isaac Guerendo
They took Isaac Guerendo at par in slot 129, which is nothing to complain about. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick131
Rnd4
Jacob Cowing
Jacob Cowing at pick No. 131 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick166
Rnd5
Khristian Boyd
They paid a round early for Khristian Boyd in No. 166, more than the board wanted. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick188
Rnd6
Delmar Glaze
No edge and no loss on Delmar Glaze in the Round 6 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick210
Rnd6
Tanner McLachlan
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Tanner McLachlan at Round 6, Pick 35. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick215
Rnd6
Matthew Jones
Matthew Jones in the 215th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick223
Rnd7
Bub Means
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Bub Means at the 223rd pick is the proof. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
