Ward is the plan now, and the 49ers grade out a D+. There is reaching, and then there is Dominic Lovett at pick 252. The 49ers jumped the board by 130 and dared it to prove them wrong.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. They have staked the next five years on Cam Ward, which is the only story that really matters here.
Leaving running back unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. With running back and tight end unsolved, spending premium capital on safety is the choice that costs them.
However the rest shakes out, Emmanwori at that price is a win they earned.
Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.
Pick Analysis
Pick7
Rnd1
Cam Ward
No edge and no loss on Cam Ward in Round 1, Pick 7; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick46
Rnd2
Nick Emmanwori
You do not let a safety like Nick Emmanwori reach the 46th overall pick and blink. They did not. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick53
Rnd2
Malaki Starks
A curious use of the 53rd pick. Running back and tight end needed the pick; a safety in Malaki Starks did not.
Pick54
Rnd2
Tyleik Williams
A slide stopped in pick No. 54, with Tyleik Williams worth more than the price. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick75
Rnd3
Jayden Higgins
Jayden Higgins at the Round 3 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick76
Rnd3
Omarr Norman-Lott
Omarr Norman-Lott in slot 76 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick100
Rnd3
Jared Wilson
No drama and no debate, Jared Wilson went about where he belonged in No. 100. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick117
Rnd4
Smael Mondon Jr.
A tidy little value on Smael Mondon Jr. in slot 117, a step better than break-even. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick147
Rnd5
Quincy Riley
Quincy Riley at the 147th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick201
Rnd6
RJ Oben
RJ Oben at pick No. 201 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick252
Rnd7
Dominic Lovett
They left a pile of value on the table to take Dominic Lovett this early at the Round 7 slot. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
