The 49ers fleeced the room on the phones and earned a A. Whoever sat across the table from the 49ers should ask for a receipt. They cleaned the room out, prying loose far more value than they gave up, and it was the quiet MVP of their weekend.
West has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. The Crenshaw-Dickson value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.
The 49ers paired the rookies with proven help, Trey Smith leading the way.
In the end it comes back to Jalon Walker, and a haul good enough to build on right away.
Pick Analysis
Pick43
Rnd2
Jalon Walker
They will replay Jalon Walker at pick 43 for years; that is how good the value is. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick45
Rnd2
Malaki Starks
Malaki Starks in pick No. 45 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick100
Rnd3
Darius Alexander
A reasonable price with a little left over, Darius Alexander in the Round 3 slot. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick113
Rnd4
Jared Wilson
Jared Wilson is a better player than the 113th pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick147
Rnd5
Dorian Strong
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, Dorian Strong in slot 147, plain and simple. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick159
Rnd5
CJ West
Value said wait; CJ West in No. 159 says they were not listening. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick160
Rnd5
Trevor Etienne
Trevor Etienne in Round 5, Pick 22 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick173
Rnd5
Elijah Roberts
They went early on Elijah Roberts in the 173rd overall pick, and the value did not follow. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick198
Rnd6
Antwane Wells Jr.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Antwane Wells Jr.. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick227
Rnd7
Brandon Crenshaw-Dickson
Brandon Crenshaw-Dickson in pick 227 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick229
Rnd7
Donovan Edwards
Donovan Edwards at slot 229 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick249
Rnd7
Ja'Quinden Jackson
The board had Ja'Quinden Jackson higher than No. 249, and the running back fell to them anyway. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
