Orca76 DRAFTING FOR THE49ers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall
C+
ValueC
NeedB-
TradesB-
FutureB-
Some hits, some head-scratchers, and a C+ for the 49ers. Boards are made to be trusted, and the 49ers shredded theirs for Trey Zuhn III. He came off 79 spots early, and the room will hear about it.
Landing Johnson that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. The wide receiver spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Job largely done: offensive lineman settled and 2 of 8 of the wish list covered. Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball.
So much rides on Anthony Hill Jr. that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick Analysis
Pick30
Rnd1
Anthony Hill Jr.
They jumped the gun on Anthony Hill Jr., taking him earlier than his grade liked. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick61
Rnd2
Sonny Styles
They let Sonny Styles come to them and pounced at the Round 2 slot. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick94
Rnd3
Logan Jones
Value said wait; Logan Jones in Round 3, Pick 30 says they were not listening. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick129
Rnd4
Chris Johnson
Chris Johnson in slot 129 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick137
Rnd4
Trey Zuhn III
This one needs a full-page explanation: Trey Zuhn III in the 137th overall pick, miles early. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick138
Rnd4
DJ Campbell
DJ Campbell in the 138th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick173
Rnd5
Bud Clark
Bud Clark at pick No. 173 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick179
Rnd5
Rasheem Biles
A reach for Rasheem Biles in Round 5, Pick 40; a little patience would have been rewarded. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick205
Rnd6
Pat Coogan
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Pat Coogan well ahead of where he belonged. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
