Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B-
ValueC NeedB TradesD FutureA
A costly weekend of dealing drags the 49ers to a B-.

When the story of this class is written, it opens with Devin Culp at No. 251, a reach of 53 spots that the board flatly disagrees with. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.

That is a cornerback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer.

Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.

Pick Analysis
Pick63 Rnd2 Ruke Orhorhoro
No drama and no debate, Ruke Orhorhoro went about where he belonged in the Round 2 slot. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick94 Rnd3 Maason Smith
Maason Smith at No. 94 is a conviction pick that outran the value. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick96 Rnd3 Zak Zinter
They jumped the gun on Zak Zinter, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick124 Rnd4 Khyree Jackson
Khyree Jackson in Round 4, Pick 24 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick131 Rnd4 Roger Rosengarten
A straight-up fair deal on Roger Rosengarten at pick No. 131, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick133 Rnd4 Luke McCaffrey
A reach for Luke McCaffrey in slot 133; a little patience would have been rewarded. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick176 Rnd6 Jaylen Harrell
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Jaylen Harrell well ahead of where he belonged. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick215 Rnd6 Frank Gore Jr.
Frank Gore Jr. at pick No. 215 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick230 Rnd7 KT Leveston
They paid up for KT Leveston at the Round 7 slot when waiting would have done the job. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick232 Rnd7 Joshua Cephus
Joshua Cephus at slot 232 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick251 Rnd7 Devin Culp
They left a pile of value on the table to take Devin Culp this early at Round 7, Pick 31. The roster fit checks out.
Pick254 Rnd7 De'Corian Clark
They talked themselves into De'Corian Clark at the 254th pick, and the board did not agree. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
