FutureB-
The 49ers bled value on every deal, hence the D-. You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The 49ers did exactly that with Jay Higgins in slot 147. A D- that will need time and luck to look better.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. The Borregales pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with quarterback still on the board.
They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. On value alone, Hampton makes the weekend a net positive.
In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.
Pick Analysis
Pick20
Rnd1
Mykel Williams
In Round 1, Pick 20 they get a double-digit-sack hope. A real need, handled.
Pick43
Rnd2
Tyleik Williams
A tidy little value on Tyleik Williams in No. 43, a step better than break-even. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick51
Rnd2
Omarion Hampton
Omarion Hampton at slot 51 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick75
Rnd3
Elic Ayomanor
A quiet steal in pick No. 75: Elic Ayomanor for less than the market said. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick85
Rnd3
Jared Wilson
Jared Wilson at the 85th pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick100
Rnd3
Charles Grant
Nice patience on Charles Grant, who had no business lasting to the 100th overall pick. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick113
Rnd4
Anthony Belton
By-the-book stuff, Anthony Belton at Round 4, Pick 11 squarely in line with his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick138
Rnd4
Andres Borregales
A surprising call. With quarterback still to address, they spent pick 138 on Andres Borregales, a specialist they were not short of.
Pick147
Rnd5
Jay Higgins
They talked themselves into Jay Higgins at pick No. 147, and the board did not agree. It fills a real need, too.
Pick160
Rnd5
Luke Lachey
Luke Lachey in slot 160 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick227
Rnd7
Craig Woodson
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Craig Woodson at No. 227. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick249
Rnd7
Jabbar Muhammad
Jabbar Muhammad slid further than he should have, and the 249th pick is lovely value for the cornerback. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick252
Rnd7
Shilo Sanders
They left a pile of value on the table to take Shilo Sanders this early at the 252nd overall pick. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
