The 49ers went off-script early, and it cost them a F.

You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The 49ers did exactly that with Devin Culp in the 215th pick.

The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Gould. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped running back, which is a strange place to end up.

With running back, interior defensive lineman and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on cornerback is the choice that costs them.

In the end, a class that has to defy its grades just to matter.
