Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B
ValueC+ NeedB TradesA+ FutureB-
The 49ers won the weekend at the trade table. Grade: B.

The move everyone will second-guess came early. The 49ers reached some 84 spots for Myles Cole, and value like that does not grow back. No fireworks, but a solid B.

The phones were where this weekend was really won. That is a cornerback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.

Spending an early pick on cornerback with interior defensive lineman and tight end open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain.

In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.

Pick Analysis
Pick50 Rnd2 Cooper DeJean
They barely believed it either: Cooper DeJean still on the board at slot 50. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick53 Rnd2 Graham Barton
Nothing to complain about; Graham Barton went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick63 Rnd2 Sedrick Van Pran
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Sedrick Van Pran well ahead of where he belonged. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick94 Rnd3 Cooper Beebe
Cooper Beebe in No. 94 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick98 Rnd3 Cam Hart
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Cam Hart adds a cornerback and leaves interior defensive lineman and tight end untouched.
Pick125 Rnd4 Braelon Allen
Braelon Allen at the Round 4 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick132 Rnd4 Luke McCaffrey
They paid a round early for Luke McCaffrey in No. 132, more than the board wanted. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick176 Rnd6 JD Bertrand
They left a pile of value on the table to take JD Bertrand this early at the 176th overall pick. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick209 Rnd6 Garret Greenfield
They talked themselves into Garret Greenfield at the Round 6 slot, and the board did not agree. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick214 Rnd6 Eric Watts
Circle this one: Eric Watts at pick 214 is a fall that decides a draft. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick215 Rnd6 Myles Cole
A real head-scratcher, Myles Cole in Round 6, Pick 40 is miles ahead of his ranking. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick249 Rnd7 Taulia Tagovailoa
By-the-book stuff, Taulia Tagovailoa at the 249th pick squarely in line with his ranking. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
