Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B
ValueC+ NeedB TradesB FutureB
A respectable, level-headed haul for the 49ers: B.

The 49ers did not so much draft Sai'vion Jones as overpay for him, 62 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend.

Landing Howard that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. The trade work was a quiet net positive. Offensive lineman is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.

Pick Analysis
Pick14 Rnd1 Kenneth Grant
In the 14th pick they get a run-stuffing presence up front at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick43 Rnd2 Jihaad Campbell
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jihaad Campbell. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick75 Rnd3 Sai'vion Jones
A real head-scratcher, Sai'vion Jones in pick No. 75 is miles ahead of his ranking. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick80 Rnd3 Donovan Jackson
They took Donovan Jackson at par in slot 80, which is nothing to complain about. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick100 Rnd3 Gunnar Helm
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Gunnar Helm at pick 100 is the proof. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick113 Rnd4 Jacob Parrish
Jacob Parrish at Round 4, Pick 11 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick119 Rnd4 Jared Wilson
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Jared Wilson at pick 119. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick138 Rnd4 Dont'e Thornton Jr.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Dont'e Thornton Jr.. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick147 Rnd5 Joshua Farmer
Somehow Joshua Farmer was still sitting there in pick No. 147, and they pounced on premier interior defensive lineman value. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick151 Rnd5 Will Howard
A quarterback of that caliber at the Round 5 slot is the definition of value, full stop. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick187 Rnd6 Carson Vinson
They reached a country mile for Carson Vinson at slot 187, and the board is aghast. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick226 Rnd7 Robert Longerbeam
Robert Longerbeam at the 226th overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick230 Rnd7 Trevor Etienne
They read the board right and Trevor Etienne was the payoff at the 230th pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick249 Rnd7 Tonka Hemingway
Tonka Hemingway at No. 249 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick252 Rnd7 Jaylin Lane
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jaylin Lane in Round 7, Pick 36, miles early. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
