Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B+
ValueB- NeedB TradesA FutureB+
A sensible, unshowy class lands the 49ers a B+.

You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The 49ers did exactly that with Ethan Downs in the 147th overall pick. It does the job without flash, and the B+ reflects it.

Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Sanders. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain. The trade work was a quiet net positive.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.

Pick Analysis
Pick20 Rnd1 Walter Nolen
In pick 20 they get a pocket-collapsing interior rusher. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick43 Rnd2 Jihaad Campbell
Good price on Jihaad Campbell in pick No. 43, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The roster fit checks out.
Pick51 Rnd2 Kyle Kennard
A wild overpay on Kyle Kennard in the 51st overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick75 Rnd3 Donovan Jackson
Value with a capital V on Donovan Jackson in No. 75, a genuine coup. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick100 Rnd3 Jaylin Noel
Jaylin Noel at the 100th pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick113 Rnd4 Darius Alexander
Darius Alexander at slot 113 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick122 Rnd4 Jared Wilson
You do not let an offensive lineman like Jared Wilson reach pick No. 122 and blink. They did not. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick138 Rnd4 Terrance Ferguson
Terrance Ferguson in the 138th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick147 Rnd5 Ethan Downs
Ethan Downs in Round 5, Pick 9 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It fills a real need, too.
Pick160 Rnd5 Billy Bowman Jr.
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Billy Bowman Jr. in No. 160, plain and simple. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick227 Rnd7 Raheim Sanders
Somehow Raheim Sanders was still sitting there in the Round 7 slot, and they pounced on premier running back value. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick232 Rnd7 Cam Jackson
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Cam Jackson. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick249 Rnd7 Robert Longerbeam
They will replay Robert Longerbeam at the 249th pick for years; that is how good the value is. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick252 Rnd7 Jacory Croskey-Merritt
Value said wait; Jacory Croskey-Merritt in slot 252 says they were not listening. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
