Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B
ValueB NeedB TradesB- FutureA-
Grand theft in pick No. 227: the 49ers steal Tuten and grade out a B.

You build a draft on nights like this. Bhayshul Tuten had no business being available in pick 227, and the 49ers did the only sane thing and turned in the card. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.

They will need Wilson to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer.

A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.

Pick Analysis
Pick15 Rnd1 Mykel Williams
In Round 1, Pick 15 they get juice off the edge at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick43 Rnd2 Walter Nolen
The board fumbled Walter Nolen all the way to the Round 2 slot, and they scooped it up. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick75 Rnd3 Barrett Carter
Barrett Carter at slot 75 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick76 Rnd3 Jared Wilson
A big swing on Jared Wilson at pick 76, well ahead of any board in the building. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick100 Rnd3 Darius Alexander
Nothing to complain about; Darius Alexander went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick113 Rnd4 Terrance Ferguson
They paid sticker price for Terrance Ferguson in the 113th overall pick, and that is fine. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick138 Rnd4 Jacob Parrish
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, Jacob Parrish in the 138th pick, plain and simple. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick147 Rnd5 Pat Bryant
Pat Bryant in No. 147 lands just on the right side of the ledger. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick149 Rnd5 Emery Jones Jr.
Emery Jones Jr. at Round 5, Pick 11 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick181 Rnd6 Dont'e Thornton Jr.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Dont'e Thornton Jr.. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick204 Rnd6 Cam Jackson
Cam Jackson at the Round 6 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick227 Rnd7 Bhayshul Tuten
Bhayshul Tuten in slot 227 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick249 Rnd7 Luke Lachey
Circle this one: Luke Lachey at No. 249 is a fall that decides a draft. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick252 Rnd7 Tonka Hemingway
They jumped the gun on Tonka Hemingway, taking him earlier than his grade liked. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
