Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B
ValueB- NeedB TradesB+ FutureB-
The 49ers did the meat-and-potatoes work well: B.

The 49ers did not so much draft R.J. Oben as overpay for him, 136 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. No fireworks, but a solid B.

Getting Etienne where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. A modest surplus at the table, banked quietly.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.

Pick Analysis
Pick11 Rnd1 Will Johnson
They did well to land Will Johnson in No. 11, just ahead of his grade. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick58 Rnd2 Tyleik Williams
A slide stopped in the Round 2 slot, with Tyleik Williams worth more than the price. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick75 Rnd3 Sai'vion Jones
Sai'vion Jones in slot 75 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick79 Rnd3 Donovan Jackson
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Donovan Jackson. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick100 Rnd3 Charles Grant
A tidy little value on Charles Grant in pick No. 100, a step better than break-even. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick113 Rnd4 Gunnar Helm
Gunnar Helm at pick 113 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick138 Rnd4 Darius Alexander
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Darius Alexander at the 138th pick is the proof. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick147 Rnd5 Dont'e Thornton Jr.
A wild overpay on Dont'e Thornton Jr. in the 147th overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick187 Rnd6 Jay Higgins
Nothing to complain about; Jay Higgins went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick226 Rnd7 Kyle Monangai
Somehow Kyle Monangai was still sitting there in No. 226, and they pounced on premier running back value. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick230 Rnd7 Chimere Dike
Taking Chimere Dike in slot 230 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick249 Rnd7 R.J. Oben
R.J. Oben in pick No. 249 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick252 Rnd7 Trevor Etienne
They will replay Trevor Etienne at Round 7, Pick 36 for years; that is how good the value is. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
