Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B-
ValueC NeedB TradesB- FutureB-
Nothing loud, just a tidy B- for the 49ers.

There is conviction, and then there is this. The 49ers took R.J. Oben a full 159 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend.

They banked enough surplus on Monangai to cover a lot of smaller sins. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.

The roster is better shaped than it was, with offensive lineman chief among the fixes. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.

A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.

Pick Analysis
Pick11 Rnd1 Walter Nolen
In No. 11 they get a pocket-collapsing interior rusher, even if it was a touch early. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick43 Rnd2 Jihaad Campbell
A straight-up fair deal on Jihaad Campbell at pick No. 43, value and slot in agreement. The roster fit checks out.
Pick75 Rnd3 Charles Grant
A real head-scratcher, Charles Grant in the 75th overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick100 Rnd3 Maxwell Hairston
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, Maxwell Hairston in the Round 3 slot, plain and simple. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick119 Rnd4 Darius Alexander
No drama and no debate, Darius Alexander went about where he belonged in Round 4, Pick 17. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick138 Rnd4 Luke Lachey
Luke Lachey in the 138th pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick149 Rnd5 Emery Jones Jr.
Emery Jones Jr. in the 149th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick187 Rnd6 Chimere Dike
They paid up for Chimere Dike at Round 6, Pick 11 when waiting would have done the job. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick226 Rnd7 R.J. Oben
R.J. Oben at the 226th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick230 Rnd7 Kyle Monangai
Somehow Kyle Monangai was still sitting there in slot 230, and they pounced on premier running back value. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick249 Rnd7 Sean Martin
They left a pile of value on the table to take Sean Martin this early at the Round 7 slot. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick252 Rnd7 Joshua Simon
A big swing on Joshua Simon at pick No. 252, well ahead of any board in the building. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
