A solid, sensible weekend for the 49ers: B-. Nobody had Carson Vinson this high, and it is not close. The 49ers reached 31 spots to get him at the 189th overall pick.
That is a running back worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick Analysis
Pick11
Rnd1
Will Campbell
In pick 11 they get a blindside protector at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick43
Rnd2
JT Tuimoloau
JT Tuimoloau at the 43rd overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick75
Rnd3
Charles Grant
Charles Grant at the 75th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick99
Rnd3
Jordan Phillips
They went early on Jordan Phillips in slot 99, and the value did not follow. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick112
Rnd4
Darius Alexander
Darius Alexander at Round 4, Pick 11 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick138
Rnd4
Nick Nash
A conviction pick on Nick Nash at No. 138 that the board grades a round light. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick139
Rnd4
Jordan James
They read the board right and Jordan James was the payoff at No. 139. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick189
Rnd6
Carson Vinson
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Carson Vinson well ahead of where he belonged. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick228
Rnd7
Jackson Hawes
A real head-scratcher, Jackson Hawes in the 228th pick is miles ahead of his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
Pick232
Rnd7
Moliki Matavao
Value said wait; Moliki Matavao in the Round 7 slot says they were not listening. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick255
Rnd7
Cody Lindenberg
A clean, defensible pick in the 255th overall pick with a little surplus value in Cody Lindenberg. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
