Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall D
ValueB NeedB+ TradesF FutureB
Klubnik should have been long gone. The 49ers pounced, and earned a D.

The 49ers did not reach, did not trade up, did not blink. They just waited, and Cade Klubnik fell into pick No. 138. Put together, it is a D.

Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. With interior defensive lineman and edge rusher unsolved, spending premium capital on cornerback is the choice that costs them. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

Every board in the league had Reed-Adams lower, and that gap is the story.

It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.

Pick Analysis
Pick21 Rnd1 Jeremiyah Love
In No. 21 they get a lead back with juice, and a steal at that. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick51 Rnd2 Chris Bell
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Chris Bell in Round 2, Pick 19. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick53 Rnd2 Austin Barber
A reach for Austin Barber in slot 53; a little patience would have been rewarded. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick54 Rnd2 Sonny Styles
Sonny Styles in the 54th overall pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick62 Rnd2 Elijah Sarratt
Good price on Elijah Sarratt in the 62nd pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick85 Rnd3 Michael Taaffe
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Michael Taaffe at the Round 3 slot. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick89 Rnd3 Eli Stowers
Eli Stowers slipping to pick 89 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick115 Rnd4 Tacario Davis
A straight-up fair deal on Tacario Davis at pick No. 115, value and slot in agreement. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick122 Rnd4 Ar'maj Reed-Adams
Ar'maj Reed-Adams at slot 122 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick138 Rnd4 Cade Klubnik
The board fumbled Cade Klubnik all the way to the 138th pick, and they scooped it up. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick139 Rnd4 DJ McKinney
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, DJ McKinney adds a cornerback and leaves interior defensive lineman and edge rusher untouched.
Pick140 Rnd4 Blake Miller
Fair-plus on Blake Miller, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick141 Rnd5 Logan Jones
They did well to land Logan Jones in pick 141, just ahead of his grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick193 Rnd6 Evan Stewart
Evan Stewart in the 193rd overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
