Yates DRAFTING FOR THE49ers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall
B-
ValueC+
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
A sensible, unshowy class lands the 49ers a B-. Nobody else had Kyren Lacy anywhere near the 252nd overall pick. The 49ers did, by 56 spots, and that gap is the whole story.
Jones Jr. at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The roster is better shaped than it was, with offensive lineman chief among the fixes.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick Analysis
Pick11
Rnd1
Jalon Walker
In slot 11 they get a green-dot type in the middle, even if it was a touch early. A real need, handled.
Pick43
Rnd2
Derrick Harmon
Nice patience on Derrick Harmon, who had no business lasting to the Round 2 slot. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick75
Rnd3
Cam Skattebo
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Cam Skattebo. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick100
Rnd3
Jared Wilson
Jared Wilson in Round 3, Pick 36 is fair value, right on his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick113
Rnd4
Jordan Burch
You do not let an edge rusher like Jordan Burch reach No. 113 and blink. They did not. The roster fit checks out.
Pick138
Rnd4
Jeffrey Bassa
Jeffrey Bassa slipping to the 138th overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick147
Rnd5
Emery Jones Jr.
Emery Jones Jr. in No. 147 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick160
Rnd5
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Dont'e Thornton Jr. in the 160th overall pick, miles early. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick227
Rnd7
Jabbar Muhammad
They went early on Jabbar Muhammad in the Round 7 slot, and the value did not follow. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick249
Rnd7
Cam Jackson
Circle this one: Cam Jackson at pick 249 is a fall that decides a draft. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick252
Rnd7
Kyren Lacy
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Kyren Lacy well ahead of where he belonged. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
