Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B-
ValueB+ NeedB TradesC+ FutureB-
More right than wrong for the 49ers, and a B- to prove it.

Nobody else had Jayson Jones anywhere near No. 252. The 49ers did, by 45 spots, and that gap is the whole story.

That is a cornerback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. For all the activity, running back went untouched, which is hard to explain.

Spending an early pick on cornerback with running back, tight end and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. The roster is better shaped than it was, with offensive lineman chief among the fixes.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the running back spot they never got to.

Pick Analysis
Pick31 Rnd1 Cooper DeJean
In the 31st pick they get an island corner at a price that makes it sweeter. Need was not the driver here.
Pick63 Rnd2 Ladd McConkey
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Ladd McConkey in the Round 2 slot, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick88 Rnd3 Johnny Wilson
They read the board right and Johnny Wilson was the payoff at No. 88. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick94 Rnd3 Caelen Carson
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Caelen Carson adds a cornerback and leaves running back, tight end and other spots untouched.
Pick209 Rnd6 Matthew Jones
A wild overpay on Matthew Jones in Round 6, Pick 34, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick213 Rnd6 Phil Jurkovec
They paid up for Phil Jurkovec at pick 213 when waiting would have done the job. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick252 Rnd7 Jayson Jones
They talked themselves into Jayson Jones at Round 7, Pick 32, and the board did not agree. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
