The 49ers bled value on every deal, hence the C+. The Jaylen Harrell selection is the head-turner. The 49ers reached 75 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Flournoy.
Call it incomplete, and check back in a couple of seasons.
Pick Analysis
Pick63
Rnd2
Sedrick Van Pran
Sedrick Van Pran at pick 63 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick94
Rnd3
Maason Smith
Maason Smith at the 94th overall pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick124
Rnd4
Christian Jones
They liked Christian Jones enough to skip the value, taking him in Round 4, Pick 24. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick131
Rnd4
Jarrian Jones
Jarrian Jones in pick No. 131 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick133
Rnd4
Jaylen Harrell
They reached a country mile for Jaylen Harrell at No. 133, and the board is aghast. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick144
Rnd5
Layden Robinson
Value said wait; Layden Robinson in slot 144 says they were not listening. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick176
Rnd6
Javontae Jean-Baptiste
They reached into another round for Javontae Jean-Baptiste, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick211
Rnd6
Frank Gore Jr.
A premium they did not need to pay, Frank Gore Jr. a notch or two before his time. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick215
Rnd6
Ryan Flournoy
A quiet steal in pick No. 215: Ryan Flournoy for less than the market said. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick251
Rnd7
Joshua Cephus
The board had cheaper options than Joshua Cephus at the 251st overall pick, and it noticed. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
