Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B
ValueB NeedB+ TradesB- FutureB-
Best value of the weekend goes to the 49ers for DeJean: B.

Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Cooper DeJean got past him. The 49ers do not have to explain a thing at pick 63. More right than wrong, and a B to match.

The Phillips pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with running back, quarterback and other spots still on the board. That running back hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.

They are betting Taylor III proves the room right and everyone else wrong.

A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.

Pick Analysis
Pick31 Rnd1 Tyler Guyton
Tyler Guyton at No. 31 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick63 Rnd2 Cooper DeJean
Cooper DeJean at Round 2, Pick 31 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick94 Rnd3 Leonard Taylor III
The board had cheaper options than Leonard Taylor III at the 94th overall pick, and it noticed. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick124 Rnd4 Sataoa Laumea
They paid sticker price for Sataoa Laumea in the 124th pick, and that is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick131 Rnd4 Johnny Wilson
They did well to land Johnny Wilson in pick 131, just ahead of his grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick133 Rnd4 Andru Phillips
Of all the spots to shop, they chose cornerback. Andru Phillips in pick No. 133 leaves running back, quarterback and other spots for later.
Pick176 Rnd6 Layden Robinson
By-the-book stuff, Layden Robinson at slot 176 squarely in line with his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick211 Rnd6 Curtis Jacobs
Curtis Jacobs at the Round 6 slot is money in the bank, a linebacker taken below his worth. It fills a real need, too.
Pick215 Rnd6 Jared Wiley
Jared Wiley in No. 215 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick251 Rnd7 Jordan Whittington
Nothing to complain about; Jordan Whittington went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
