The 49ers cashed the board's mistake on Smith-Wade: B-.

You build a draft on nights like this. Chau Smith-Wade had no business being available in pick 252, and the 49ers did the only sane thing and turned in the card.

It is not that Hart is a bad player; it is that the 49ers had louder needs to answer first. That running back hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Job largely done: offensive lineman settled and 4 of 8 of the wish list covered.

In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.

Pick Analysis
Pick31 Rnd1 Kris Abrams-Draine
In No. 31 they get a press-man option on the boundary at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
Pick63 Rnd2 Javon Foster
Javon Foster at slot 63 is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick94 Rnd3 Zak Zinter
No drama and no debate, Zak Zinter went about where he belonged in Round 3, Pick 31. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick98 Rnd3 Cam Hart
A want over a need in the 98th pick: Cam Hart adds a cornerback while running back, interior defensive lineman and other spots keeps waiting.
Pick131 Rnd4 James Williams
They took James Williams at par in the Round 4 slot, which is nothing to complain about. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick177 Rnd6 Ty'Ron Hopper
Ty'Ron Hopper at pick 177 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the linebacker. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick209 Rnd6 Cornelius Johnson
They paid sticker price for Cornelius Johnson in the 209th overall pick, and that is fine. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick213 Rnd6 Dallin Holker
The board had Dallin Holker higher than pick No. 213, and the tight end fell to them anyway. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick215 Rnd6 Miles Frazier
Fair-plus on Miles Frazier, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick252 Rnd7 Chau Smith-Wade
The board fumbled Chau Smith-Wade all the way to the 252nd pick, and they scooped it up. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
