tt DRAFTING FOR THE49ers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall
B-
ValueC
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
The 49ers checked most of the boxes and earned a B-. The 49ers treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending the 138th overall pick on JJ Pegues a full 49 spots early.
Ransom falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. They left with offensive lineman solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick Analysis
Pick11
Rnd1
Armand Membou
In the 11th overall pick they get a long-term starter on the line, a steep price for the projection. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick43
Rnd2
Harold Fannin Jr.
They paid up for Harold Fannin Jr. at pick 43 when waiting would have done the job. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick75
Rnd3
Maxwell Hairston
No drama and no debate, Maxwell Hairston went about where he belonged in No. 75. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick99
Rnd3
Darius Alexander
Darius Alexander at the 99th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick112
Rnd4
Charles Grant
Charles Grant is a better player than Round 4, Pick 11 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick138
Rnd4
JJ Pegues
A real head-scratcher, JJ Pegues in the Round 4 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick139
Rnd4
Lathan Ransom
Taking Lathan Ransom in Round 4, Pick 38 is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick189
Rnd6
Addison West
Addison West at pick 189 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick228
Rnd7
Chimere Dike
The board had Chimere Dike higher than the 228th overall pick, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick232
Rnd7
Cody Lindenberg
They jumped the gun on Cody Lindenberg, taking him earlier than his grade liked. The roster fit checks out.
Pick255
Rnd7
Marcus Yarns
Marcus Yarns slid further than he should have, and No. 255 is lovely value for the running back. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
