Good, not great, for the 49ers: B. The Jamaree Caldwell selection is the head-turner. The 49ers reached 28 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want. They banked enough surplus on Harmon to cover a lot of smaller sins. They left with offensive lineman solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick Analysis
Pick11
Rnd1
Will Campbell
In pick No. 11 they get an anchor for the offensive line at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick43
Rnd2
Derrick Harmon
A slide stopped in No. 43, with Derrick Harmon worth more than the price. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick75
Rnd3
Charles Grant
They paid a round early for Charles Grant in Round 3, Pick 11, more than the board wanted. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick100
Rnd3
Jamaree Caldwell
A big swing on Jamaree Caldwell at the 100th pick, well ahead of any board in the building. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick113
Rnd4
Oluwafemi Oladejo
Oluwafemi Oladejo in slot 113 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick138
Rnd4
Malachi Moore
Malachi Moore at the Round 4 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick147
Rnd5
Nick Nash
No edge and no loss on Nick Nash in slot 147; it is a wash and a sensible one. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick160
Rnd5
O'Donnell Fortune
O'Donnell Fortune at Round 5, Pick 22 is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick227
Rnd7
Jamon Dumas-Johnson
Jamon Dumas-Johnson at pick No. 227 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It fills a real need, too.
Pick249
Rnd7
Nick Martin
Nick Martin at the 249th overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick252
Rnd7
Marcus Yarns
By-the-book stuff, Marcus Yarns at pick 252 squarely in line with his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
