Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall
B-
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
The 49ers won the night they stopped Mondon Jr. from sliding. Grade: B-. You build a draft on nights like this. Smael Mondon Jr. had no business being available in Round 4, Pick 36, and the 49ers did the only sane thing and turned in the card.
Every board in the league had Pegues lower, and that gap is the story. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with offensive lineman chief among the fixes.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick11
Rnd1
Mykel Williams
In slot 11 they get juice off the edge. A real need, handled.
Pick43
Rnd2
Aireontae Ersery
By-the-book stuff, Aireontae Ersery at the 43rd overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick75
Rnd3
Omarr Norman-Lott
Omarr Norman-Lott at No. 75 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick100
Rnd3
Jake Majors
Jake Majors in pick No. 100 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick113
Rnd4
Kevin Winston Jr.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Kevin Winston Jr. at pick 113 is the proof. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick138
Rnd4
Smael Mondon Jr.
They barely believed it either: Smael Mondon Jr. still on the board at Round 4, Pick 36. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick147
Rnd5
JJ Pegues
A swing that ignored the value entirely, JJ Pegues well ahead of where he belonged. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick187
Rnd6
Joshua Gray
No edge and no loss on Joshua Gray in the Round 6 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick226
Rnd7
Teddye Buchanan
The board had cheaper options than Teddye Buchanan at pick No. 226, and it noticed. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick230
Rnd7
Jermari Harris
They read the board right and Jermari Harris was the payoff at No. 230. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick249
Rnd7
Jaylin Lane
Jaylin Lane in pick 249 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick252
Rnd7
Marcus Yarns
Marcus Yarns in the Round 7 slot is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
