FutureA+
Good, not great, for the 49ers: B+. You could see the war room lean forward. Joshua Gray at No. 227 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did.
They will need Pegues to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. They will regret leaving running back for another day if the season turns on it.
Offensive lineman was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but running back.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Tyler Warren
In Round 1, Pick 31 they get a matchup weapon at tight end at a price that makes it sweeter. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick43
Rnd2
Jalon Walker
Steal is underselling it; Jalon Walker at the 43rd overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick63
Rnd2
Donovan Jackson
No edge and no loss on Donovan Jackson in slot 63; it is a wash and a sensible one. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick75
Rnd3
Jared Ivey
A straight-up fair deal on Jared Ivey at No. 75, value and slot in agreement. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick100
Rnd3
Charles Grant
Value with a capital V on Charles Grant in pick 100, a genuine coup. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick113
Rnd4
Kevin Winston Jr.
Kevin Winston Jr. at the 113th pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick138
Rnd4
Jacob Parrish
Jacob Parrish in the Round 4 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick147
Rnd5
Luke Kandra
Luke Kandra at pick No. 147 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick160
Rnd5
JJ Pegues
They reached a country mile for JJ Pegues at Round 5, Pick 22, and the board is aghast. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick227
Rnd7
Joshua Gray
Circle this one: Joshua Gray at the 227th overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick249
Rnd7
Isaac TeSlaa
They read the board right and Isaac TeSlaa was the payoff at the 249th pick. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick252
Rnd7
Ty Hamilton
Ty Hamilton in No. 252 is fair value, right on his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
