No fireworks, just a tidy B- for the 49ers. The Jaylen Harrell pick is the one that will follow the 49ers into the fall. They took him 64 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain. Getting Brownlee Jr. where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
A small leak at the table, if not a fatal one.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick Analysis
Pick63
Rnd2
Ruke Orhorhoro
They took Ruke Orhorhoro at par in Round 2, Pick 31, which is nothing to complain about. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick94
Rnd3
Javon Foster
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Javon Foster. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick124
Rnd4
Jarvis Brownlee Jr.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Jarvis Brownlee Jr. in the Round 4 slot. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick133
Rnd4
Roger Rosengarten
No drama and no debate, Roger Rosengarten went about where he belonged in No. 133. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick144
Rnd5
Jaylen Harrell
A big swing on Jaylen Harrell at pick 144, well ahead of any board in the building. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick174
Rnd5
Ryan Flournoy
Value said wait; Ryan Flournoy in the 174th pick says they were not listening. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick176
Rnd6
Andrew Raym
They left a pile of value on the table to take Andrew Raym this early at pick No. 176. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick211
Rnd6
Zion Tupuola-Fetui
A straight-up fair deal on Zion Tupuola-Fetui at the 211th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick215
Rnd6
Frank Gore Jr.
They paid a round early for Frank Gore Jr. in the 215th pick, more than the board wanted. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick251
Rnd7
Joshua Cephus
Joshua Cephus in pick 251 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
