FutureB-
A passer of the future in Mendoza, and a B-, for the Raiders. The tape said wait; the Raiders did not. Dominic Zvada went at pick 184, a good 64 picks before the board was ready. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.
Everything downstream of Fernando Mendoza depends on Fernando Mendoza, and the building knows it. Leaving running back unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The Cooper Jr. steal is the beam this whole class leans on.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick2
Rnd1
Fernando Mendoza
In pick No. 2 they get a passer to set the clock by. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick36
Rnd2
Kayden McDonald
They read the board right and Kayden McDonald was the payoff at the 36th pick. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick44
Rnd2
Emmanuel Pregnon
No drama and no debate, Emmanuel Pregnon went about where he belonged in No. 44. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick67
Rnd3
Carter Smith
They reached a country mile for Carter Smith at the 67th overall pick, and the board is aghast. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick102
Rnd4
Omar Cooper Jr.
Omar Cooper Jr. in pick 102 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick117
Rnd4
Bishop Fitzgerald
The board had Bishop Fitzgerald higher than the Round 4 slot, and the safety fell to them anyway. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick135
Rnd4
Jacob Rodriguez
Jacob Rodriguez at the 135th pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick177
Rnd5
Josh Moten
They went early on Josh Moten in pick No. 177, and the value did not follow. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick181
Rnd6
Taylen Green
Taylen Green is a better player than Round 6, Pick 1 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick184
Rnd6
Dominic Zvada
This one needs a full-page explanation: Dominic Zvada in slot 184, miles early. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick219
Rnd7
Solomon Tuliaupupu
Solomon Tuliaupupu at No. 219 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
