Draft Grade — Chargers
Overall B+
ValueB- NeedB+ TradesA+ FutureB
The Chargers worked the phones like thieves and earned a B+.

The trade table was a mismatch, and the Chargers were on the right end of it, hauling in a fortune in surplus value. Good, not great, and the B+ says as much.

Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. If Wiley pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.

Getting Wilson where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.

Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.

Pick Analysis
Pick19 Rnd1 Byron Murphy II
In pick 19 they get a wrecking ball inside. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick37 Rnd2 Roman Wilson
They paid a round early for Roman Wilson in the 37th pick, more than the board wanted. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick42 Rnd2 T.J. Tampa
They jumped the gun on T.J. Tampa, taking him earlier than his grade liked. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick69 Rnd3 Payton Wilson
Value with a capital V on Payton Wilson in slot 69, a genuine coup. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick86 Rnd3 Max Melton
A quiet steal in the 86th overall pick: Max Melton for less than the market said. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick105 Rnd4 MarShawn Lloyd
Quietly one of the better values of the day, MarShawn Lloyd at the Round 4 slot. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick110 Rnd4 Blake Fisher
A reach on Blake Fisher in Round 4, Pick 10; the board had better options right there. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick140 Rnd5 Jared Wiley
Jared Wiley at pick No. 140 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It fills a real need, too.
Pick181 Rnd6 Cornelius Johnson
Cornelius Johnson at the 181st overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick225 Rnd7 Myles Murphy
No edge and no loss on Myles Murphy in slot 225; it is a wash and a sensible one. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick253 Rnd7 Josh Wallace
A straight-up fair deal on Josh Wallace at pick 253, value and slot in agreement. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
