FutureA
The 49ers won the night they stopped Martinez from sliding. Grade: B+. The rest of the league will want that one back. Damien Martinez tumbling to the 49ers in the Round 7 slot is a gift they did not have to think twice about. More right than wrong, and a B+ to match.
They will need McCoy to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman. The Ed Ingram pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns.
Offensive lineman is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick Analysis
Pick24
Rnd1
Jack Sawyer
In slot 24 they get a premier pass rusher. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick43
Rnd2
Jalon Walker
Steal is underselling it; Jalon Walker at the Round 2 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick75
Rnd3
Harold Fannin Jr.
They robbed the room for Harold Fannin Jr. here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The roster fit checks out.
Pick99
Rnd3
TreVeyon Henderson
A top-tier running back at a bargain, TreVeyon Henderson in pick No. 99, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick101
Rnd3
Andrew Mukuba
Somehow Andrew Mukuba was still sitting there in pick 101, and they pounced on premier safety value. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick111
Rnd4
Jake Majors
Fair-plus on Jake Majors, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick137
Rnd4
Luke Kandra
Circle this one: Luke Kandra at Round 4, Pick 36 is a fall that decides a draft. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick140
Rnd5
Smael Mondon Jr.
They will replay Smael Mondon Jr. at the 140th pick for years; that is how good the value is. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick185
Rnd6
Jeffrey Bassa
Jeffrey Bassa at slot 185 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It fills a real need, too.
Pick226
Rnd7
DJ Uiagalelei
They talked themselves into DJ Uiagalelei at the Round 7 slot, and the board did not agree. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick230
Rnd7
Damien Martinez
You do not let a running back like Damien Martinez reach Round 7, Pick 14 and blink. They did not. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick249
Rnd7
Bru McCoy
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Bru McCoy. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick255
Rnd7
Trey Wedig
Trey Wedig in the 255th overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
