Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall
C
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesF
FutureB-
The Cowboys bled value on every deal, hence the C. Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Cowboys spent the Round 7 slot on Tyler Batty, a name most had 31 spots down the list. Call it a C and check back in two years.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. However the rest shakes out, Blue at that price is a win they earned.
The linebacker hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
If Tyler Warren and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick Analysis
Pick20
Rnd1
Tyler Warren
In the 20th pick they get a red-zone target to build around. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick44
Rnd2
Donovan Jackson
A real head-scratcher, Donovan Jackson in pick 44 is miles ahead of his ranking. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick51
Rnd2
Azareye'h Thomas
No drama and no debate, Azareye'h Thomas went about where he belonged in pick No. 51. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick74
Rnd3
Kyle Kennard
Kyle Kennard at No. 74 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick76
Rnd3
Deone Walker
They paid up for Deone Walker at the Round 3 slot when waiting would have done the job. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick85
Rnd3
Ozzy Trapilo
Ozzy Trapilo at Round 3, Pick 21 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick111
Rnd4
Savion Williams
Savion Williams at No. 111 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick114
Rnd4
Jalen Milroe
Circle this one: Jalen Milroe at slot 114 is a fall that decides a draft. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick204
Rnd6
Jaydon Blue
You do not let a running back like Jaydon Blue reach pick 204 and blink. They did not. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick208
Rnd6
Jordan Hancock
They jumped the gun on Jordan Hancock, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick211
Rnd6
Howard Cross III
A big swing on Howard Cross III at the Round 6 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick217
Rnd7
Tyler Batty
Tyler Batty at pick No. 217 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
