FutureB-
Nothing loud, just a tidy B- for the Bears. Nobody else had Dont'e Thornton Jr. anywhere near the 133rd overall pick. The Bears did, by 52 spots, and that gap is the whole story. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B-.
They will regret leaving cornerback for another day if the season turns on it. That is a running back worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. They left with edge rusher solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
The skill positions did well by the weekend.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick Analysis
Pick14
Rnd1
Tyler Warren
In Round 1, Pick 14 they get a matchup weapon at tight end at fair value. More want than need.
Pick39
Rnd2
Omarion Hampton
They read the board right and Omarion Hampton was the payoff at the 39th overall pick. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick45
Rnd2
Jayden Higgins
They liked Jayden Higgins enough to skip the value, taking him in the Round 2 slot. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick63
Rnd2
Demetrius Knight Jr.
Demetrius Knight Jr. at pick No. 63 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It fills a real need, too.
Pick66
Rnd3
Cameron Williams
Cameron Williams at slot 66 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick72
Rnd3
Kyle Kennard
Kyle Kennard at the 72nd pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick133
Rnd4
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. at the Round 4 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The roster fit checks out.
Pick140
Rnd5
Aeneas Peebles
Aeneas Peebles at slot 140 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick146
Rnd5
Willie Lampkin
This one needs a full-page explanation: Willie Lampkin in Round 5, Pick 8, miles early. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick148
Rnd5
Tyler Baron
They paid up for Tyler Baron at pick 148 when waiting would have done the job. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick163
Rnd5
JJ Pegues
A swing that ignored the value entirely, JJ Pegues well ahead of where he belonged. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
