Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall
D+
ValueB-
NeedB+
TradesF
FutureB-
Maye is the Cowboys' new face under center. Grade: D+. Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Zion Logue at No. 216 is 70 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline. A D+ that will need time and luck to look better.
Drake Maye is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. The tight end hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
The Torrence pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.
In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.
Pick Analysis
Pick24
Rnd1
Drake Maye
A tidy bit of business in the 24th overall pick, where Drake Maye graded well above the range. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick56
Rnd2
Xavier Worthy
Xavier Worthy at the Round 2 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick87
Rnd3
Zak Zinter
This one needs a full-page explanation: Zak Zinter in slot 87, miles early. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick96
Rnd3
Braelon Allen
They went early on Braelon Allen in pick No. 96, and the value did not follow. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick114
Rnd4
Gabriel Murphy
A edge rusher of that caliber at the 114th pick is the definition of value, full stop. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick136
Rnd4
Johnny Wilson
Johnny Wilson at Round 4, Pick 36 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick145
Rnd5
Tommy Eichenberg
By-the-book stuff, Tommy Eichenberg at pick 145 squarely in line with his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick147
Rnd5
Jaylan Ford
Jaylan Ford at No. 147 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick174
Rnd5
Drake Nugent
They talked themselves into Drake Nugent at the Round 5 slot, and the board did not agree. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick203
Rnd6
Ro Torrence
Circle this one: Ro Torrence at slot 203 is a fall that decides a draft. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick216
Rnd6
Zion Logue
Zion Logue at the 216th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick233
Rnd7
Emani Bailey
They reached into another round for Emani Bailey, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
