Maye is the plan now, and the Cowboys grade out a D. The tape said wait; the Cowboys did not. Jaylan Ford went at the Round 5 slot, a good 52 picks before the board was ready.
They have staked the next five years on Drake Maye, which is the only story that really matters here. The trades bled value they could not afford to lose.
The tight end spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Maye.
It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.
Pick Analysis
Pick3
Rnd1
Marvin Harrison Jr.
In the Round 1 slot they get a weapon on the perimeter. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick24
Rnd1
Drake Maye
In Round 1, Pick 24 they get their quarterback of the future, outstanding value to boot. A real need, handled.
Pick34
Rnd2
Jordan Morgan
By-the-book stuff, Jordan Morgan at pick 34 squarely in line with his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick56
Rnd2
Malachi Corley
Malachi Corley at the 56th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick64
Rnd2
Kingsley Suamataia
A reasonable price with a little left over, Kingsley Suamataia in slot 64. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick87
Rnd3
Khyree Jackson
A conviction pick on Khyree Jackson at pick No. 87 that the board grades a round light. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick95
Rnd3
Braelon Allen
A premium they did not need to pay, Braelon Allen a notch or two before his time. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick114
Rnd4
Beaux Limmer
A reach on Beaux Limmer in No. 114; the board had better options right there. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick136
Rnd4
Tommy Eichenberg
Tommy Eichenberg at Round 4, Pick 36 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick145
Rnd5
Jalyx Hunt
Jalyx Hunt at the 145th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick147
Rnd5
Brennan Jackson
Brennan Jackson in the Round 5 slot is fair value, right on his grade. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick153
Rnd5
Jaylan Ford
A real head-scratcher, Jaylan Ford in pick 153 is miles ahead of his ranking. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick174
Rnd5
Jordan Jefferson
They went early on Jordan Jefferson in the 174th pick, and the value did not follow. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick216
Rnd6
Miyan Williams
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Miyan Williams. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
