Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall
D-
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesF
FutureB-
The Patriots lost the trade table, and the D- tells the story. The trade table was where it all came apart. The Patriots shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill.
The Allen reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Ransaw. The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and interior defensive lineman is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick6
Rnd1
Will Campbell
In the 6th overall pick they get a blindside protector. A real need, handled.
Pick38
Rnd2
Tyler Booker
A straight-up fair deal on Tyler Booker at slot 38, value and slot in agreement. It fills a real need, too.
Pick69
Rnd3
Jaylin Noel
They did well to land Jaylin Noel in Round 3, Pick 5, just ahead of his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick77
Rnd3
Ozzy Trapilo
No edge and no loss on Ozzy Trapilo in No. 77; it is a wash and a sensible one. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick91
Rnd3
Ashton Gillotte
Ashton Gillotte at pick 91 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick108
Rnd4
LeQuint Allen
This one needs a full-page explanation: LeQuint Allen in the 108th pick, miles early. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick144
Rnd5
Bhayshul Tuten
They paid a round early for Bhayshul Tuten in pick No. 144, more than the board wanted. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick190
Rnd6
KeAndre Lambert-Smith
They jumped the gun on KeAndre Lambert-Smith, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick220
Rnd7
Caleb Ransaw
A slide stopped in Round 7, Pick 4, with Caleb Ransaw worth more than the price. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick238
Rnd7
Teddye Buchanan
Teddye Buchanan at the Round 7 slot is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
