FutureA
The Cowboys let McGlothern fall into their laps, and walked away with a D. Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Jalyx Hunt at the Round 4 slot is 38 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. That McGlothern pick is the receipt they will wave around later. The Hunt pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at tight end.
They punted on tight end, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, tight end very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick24
Rnd1
Kool-Aid McKinstry
In pick No. 24 they get an island corner. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick27
Rnd1
Brian Thomas Jr.
In Round 1, Pick 27 they get a home-run threat at receiver at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick33
Rnd2
Tyler Guyton
Tyler Guyton in the 33rd pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick39
Rnd2
T'Vondre Sweat
T'Vondre Sweat in slot 39 is fair value, right on his grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick56
Rnd2
Troy Franklin
Circle this one: Troy Franklin at slot 56 is a fall that decides a draft. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick64
Rnd2
Junior Colson
Junior Colson slid further than he should have, and the 64th overall pick is lovely value for the linebacker. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick87
Rnd3
Gabriel Murphy
By-the-book stuff, Gabriel Murphy at pick No. 87 squarely in line with his ranking. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick90
Rnd3
Trey Benson
A clean, defensible pick in the 90th pick with a little surplus value in Trey Benson. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick93
Rnd3
Zak Zinter
Zak Zinter at the Round 3 slot jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick108
Rnd4
Michael Pratt
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Michael Pratt. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick114
Rnd4
Jalyx Hunt
They bypassed pressing needs at tight end to take Jalyx Hunt, an edge rusher that was not the priority.
Pick116
Rnd4
Matt Goncalves
They paid sticker price for Matt Goncalves in No. 116, and that is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick153
Rnd5
Tanor Bortolini
Tanor Bortolini at the 153rd overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick174
Rnd5
Jaylan Ford
They talked themselves into Jaylan Ford at No. 174, and the board did not agree. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick216
Rnd6
Dwight McGlothern
Dwight McGlothern in the Round 6 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
