Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall
C
ValueB-
NeedB+
TradesF
FutureB-
The Cowboys bled value on every deal, hence the C. It is the swing that defines the weekend: Jaylen Reed in pick 149, a good 39 spots before the room expected him. Fine in stretches, shaky in others: a C.
They banked enough surplus on Shough to cover a lot of smaller sins. The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. They will regret leaving linebacker for another day if the season turns on it.
Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
If Tetairoa McMillan and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Tetairoa McMillan
In the Round 1 slot they get a home-run threat at receiver at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick63
Rnd2
TreVeyon Henderson
TreVeyon Henderson is a better player than Round 2, Pick 31 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. The roster fit checks out.
Pick66
Rnd3
Cameron Williams
A straight-up fair deal on Cameron Williams at the 66th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick74
Rnd3
Darien Porter
They took Darien Porter at par in the 74th pick, which is nothing to complain about. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick76
Rnd3
Omarr Norman-Lott
Omarr Norman-Lott at pick No. 76 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick149
Rnd5
Jaylen Reed
A real head-scratcher, Jaylen Reed in pick 149 is miles ahead of his ranking. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick171
Rnd5
Tyler Shough
Tyler Shough in Round 5, Pick 33 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick174
Rnd5
Damien Martinez
Damien Martinez in the 174th overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick204
Rnd6
Tyler Batty
They reached a country mile for Tyler Batty at No. 204, and the board is aghast. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick211
Rnd6
Cam Jackson
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Cam Jackson well ahead of where he belonged. It fills a real need, too.
Pick239
Rnd7
Ja'Corey Brooks
Ja'Corey Brooks in pick No. 239 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick247
Rnd7
Dante Trader Jr.
A slide stopped in slot 247, with Dante Trader Jr. worth more than the price. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
