Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall B+
ValueB NeedB TradesA- FutureA-
No fireworks, just a tidy B+ for the Cowboys.

The Cowboys did not so much draft Kamran James as overpay for him, 59 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. More right than wrong, and a B+ to match.

That is a linebacker worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through wide receiver.

Bucky Irving gives the group a proven body among the projects. Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same.

Good work on the whole, with wide receiver the one box left unchecked.

Pick Analysis
Pick15 Rnd1 Arvell Reese
In No. 15 they get a three-down second-level presence at a price that makes it sweeter. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick41 Rnd2 Emmanuel McNeil-Warren
They took Emmanuel McNeil-Warren at par in the 41st pick, which is nothing to complain about. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick72 Rnd3 Keionte Scott
A reasonable price with a little left over, Keionte Scott in pick No. 72. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick112 Rnd4 Tacario Davis
By-the-book stuff, Tacario Davis at the Round 4 slot squarely in line with his ranking. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick150 Rnd5 Bud Clark
They reached into another round for Bud Clark, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick177 Rnd5 Bryce Boettcher
Bryce Boettcher in the 177th overall pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick187 Rnd6 Thaddeus Dixon
They paid sticker price for Thaddeus Dixon in slot 187, and that is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick215 Rnd6 Kamran James
A wild overpay on Kamran James in the 215th overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick221 Rnd7 Riley Mahlman
A reach for Riley Mahlman in Round 7, Pick 5; a little patience would have been rewarded. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
