Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall C+
ValueC+ NeedB TradesF FutureA+
The Commanders left with their quarterback, and a C+ to match.

The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Commanders spent their marquee pick on J.J. McCarthy, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback. Fine in stretches, shaky in others: a C+.

The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. Every board in the league had Hopper lower, and that gap is the story. The tight end hole is the one line item this class does not answer.

Tampa falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.

If J.J. McCarthy and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.

Pick Analysis
Pick13 Rnd1 J.J. McCarthy
In the 13th overall pick they get the face of the franchise, reach and all. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick36 Rnd2 Kingsley Suamataia
They reached a country mile for Kingsley Suamataia at slot 36, and the board is aghast. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick40 Rnd2 Chris Braswell
A straight-up fair deal on Chris Braswell at the Round 2 slot, value and slot in agreement. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick44 Rnd2 Cooper Beebe
No drama and no debate, Cooper Beebe went about where he belonged in the 44th pick. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick67 Rnd3 T.J. Tampa
T.J. Tampa is a better player than No. 67 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick77 Rnd3 Devontez Walker
Nothing to complain about; Devontez Walker went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick78 Rnd3 Max Melton
They paid sticker price for Max Melton in pick No. 78, and that is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick100 Rnd3 Javon Foster
Javon Foster in pick 100 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick139 Rnd5 Isaac Guerendo
Nice patience on Isaac Guerendo, who had no business lasting to No. 139. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick152 Rnd5 Ty'Ron Hopper
A real head-scratcher, Ty'Ron Hopper in pick 152 is miles ahead of his ranking. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick222 Rnd7 Josh Proctor
Josh Proctor at the 222nd pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A minor itch, scratched.
