Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall
D
ValueC+
NeedB+
TradesF
FutureA+
The Cowboys won the night they stopped Skattebo from sliding. Grade: D. Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Cam Skattebo got past him. The Cowboys do not have to explain a thing at Round 6, Pick 34. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D is the result.
The Jefferson pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. The trades bled value they could not afford to lose.
The Starks pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with cornerback and tight end still on the board. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through cornerback.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, cornerback very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick7
Rnd1
Tetairoa McMillan
In No. 7 they get a true top target. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick12
Rnd1
Luther Burden III
In the 12th pick they get a weapon on the perimeter at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick42
Rnd2
Donovan Jackson
They reached a country mile for Donovan Jackson at pick 42, and the board is aghast. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick44
Rnd2
Nick Emmanwori
Nick Emmanwori at Round 2, Pick 12 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick49
Rnd2
Jalen Milroe
Jalen Milroe at the Round 2 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick57
Rnd2
Alfred Collins
No drama and no debate, Alfred Collins went about where he belonged in the 57th overall pick. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick74
Rnd3
Malaki Starks
Of all the spots to shop, they chose safety. Malaki Starks in pick No. 74 leaves cornerback and tight end for later.
Pick76
Rnd3
Emery Jones Jr.
They reached into another round for Emery Jones Jr., and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick81
Rnd3
TreVeyon Henderson
Steal is underselling it; TreVeyon Henderson at the 81st pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick92
Rnd3
Savion Williams
They took Savion Williams at par in pick No. 92, which is nothing to complain about. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick108
Rnd4
Darius Alexander
This one needs a full-page explanation: Darius Alexander in the 108th overall pick, miles early. The roster fit checks out.
Pick148
Rnd5
Danny Stutsman
They will replay Danny Stutsman at pick 148 for years; that is how good the value is. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick168
Rnd5
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
They jumped the gun on Dont'e Thornton Jr., taking him earlier than his grade liked. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick170
Rnd5
JJ Pegues
JJ Pegues at slot 170 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick173
Rnd5
Smael Mondon Jr.
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Smael Mondon Jr. in No. 173, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick186
Rnd6
Tonka Hemingway
Tonka Hemingway at Round 6, Pick 11 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It fills a real need, too.
Pick209
Rnd6
Cam Skattebo
Cam Skattebo at pick No. 209 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick248
Rnd7
KJ Jefferson
KJ Jefferson in Round 7, Pick 32 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A need, and now a little less of one.
