TradesA+
FutureD-
A masterclass at the trade table lands the Patriots a B-. You can hear the double-takes from here. The Patriots took Malachi Lawrence at pick 95, roughly 53 spots before his name belonged. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. That Caldwell pick is the receipt they will wave around later.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up.
Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Kenyon Sadiq
In pick 31 they get a mismatch in the passing game, and a steal at that.
Pick32
Rnd1
Sonny Styles
Sonny Styles in the 32nd pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick33
Rnd2
Olaivavega Ioane
They read the board right and Olaivavega Ioane was the payoff at Round 2, Pick 1. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick95
Rnd3
Malachi Lawrence
A real head-scratcher, Malachi Lawrence in slot 95 is miles ahead of his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick125
Rnd4
Will Lee III
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Will Lee III at pick No. 125. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick131
Rnd4
Bud Clark
They did well to land Bud Clark in the Round 4 slot, just ahead of his grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick169
Rnd5
Aamil Wagner
Fair-plus on Aamil Wagner, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick189
Rnd6
Ted Hurst
The board had Ted Hurst higher than the 189th overall pick, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick200
Rnd6
Kaelon Black
A reach for Kaelon Black in slot 200; a little patience would have been rewarded. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick207
Rnd6
Jadon Canady
They took Jadon Canady at par in the 207th pick, which is nothing to complain about. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick210
Rnd6
Dallen Bentley
Dallen Bentley is a better player than pick No. 210 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick247
Rnd7
Jeff Caldwell
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Jeff Caldwell in pick 247, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
