Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall
D

FutureB+
The Cowboys found their guy under center in Ewers: D. When the story of this class is written, it opens with Quinn Ewers at Round 1, Pick 31, a reach of 61 spots that the board flatly disagrees with. Put together, it is a D.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. Quinn Ewers gives the offense a face and a plan, and the grade leans heavily on whether he hits.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through tight end. However the rest shakes out, Hampton at that price is a win they earned.
A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.
Pick Analysis
Pick14
Rnd1
Tetairoa McMillan
In pick No. 14 they get a No. 1 receiver at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick31
Rnd1
Quinn Ewers
In Round 1, Pick 31 they get a franchise quarterback, a steep price for the projection. A real need, handled.
Pick44
Rnd2
Jonah Savaiinaea
They took Jonah Savaiinaea at par in the Round 2 slot, which is nothing to complain about. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick63
Rnd2
Omarion Hampton
Omarion Hampton at slot 63 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick74
Rnd3
Ozzy Trapilo
They liked Ozzy Trapilo enough to skip the value, taking him in the 74th pick. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick76
Rnd3
Kyle Kennard
No edge and no loss on Kyle Kennard in the 76th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick83
Rnd3
Deone Walker
By-the-book stuff, Deone Walker at pick No. 83 squarely in line with his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick85
Rnd3
Savion Williams
No drama and no debate, Savion Williams went about where he belonged in slot 85. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick117
Rnd4
Emery Jones Jr.
A straight-up fair deal on Emery Jones Jr. at the 117th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick122
Rnd4
Kevin Winston Jr.
Steal is underselling it; Kevin Winston Jr. at the 122nd pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick133
Rnd4
Kyle McCord
They read the board right and Kyle McCord was the payoff at pick 133. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick149
Rnd5
Mello Dotson
Mello Dotson in Round 5, Pick 11 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick171
Rnd5
Jaylen Reed
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jaylen Reed. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick174
Rnd5
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
A premium they did not need to pay, Dont'e Thornton Jr. a notch or two before his time. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick204
Rnd6
Nazir Stackhouse
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Nazir Stackhouse. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick211
Rnd6
Jamon Dumas-Johnson
Jamon Dumas-Johnson at pick 211 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick239
Rnd7
Hayden Conner
A real head-scratcher, Hayden Conner in slot 239 is miles ahead of his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick247
Rnd7
Brady Cook
Brady Cook at the Round 7 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The roster fit checks out.
