Draft Grade — Cowboys

FutureA+
A costly weekend of dealing drags the Cowboys to a D+. You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Cowboys did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. The math is unkind, and the D+ follows.
Every board in the league had Milton III lower, and that gap is the story. They will regret leaving tight end for another day if the season turns on it. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Ford.
On the needs board they went 7 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick Analysis
Pick24
Rnd1
Brian Thomas Jr.
In No. 24 they get a go-to option on the outside at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick40
Rnd2
T'Vondre Sweat
They paid sticker price for T'Vondre Sweat in the 40th overall pick, and that is fine. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick44
Rnd2
Zach Frazier
They talked themselves into Zach Frazier at the 44th pick, and the board did not agree. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick56
Rnd2
Payton Wilson
A straight-up fair deal on Payton Wilson at pick No. 56, value and slot in agreement. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick67
Rnd3
Patrick Paul
Patrick Paul in pick 67 is fair value, right on his grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick78
Rnd3
Ja'Lynn Polk
They did well to land Ja'Lynn Polk in Round 3, Pick 14, just ahead of his grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick87
Rnd3
Khyree Jackson
A reach for Khyree Jackson in slot 87; a little patience would have been rewarded. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick112
Rnd4
Braelon Allen
Braelon Allen at the Round 4 slot is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It fills a real need, too.
Pick174
Rnd5
Joe Milton III
They left a pile of value on the table to take Joe Milton III this early at the 174th pick. The roster fit checks out.
Pick216
Rnd6
Jaylan Ford
They let Jaylan Ford come to them and pounced at pick No. 216. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick233
Rnd7
Frank Gore Jr.
Frank Gore Jr. at Round 7, Pick 13 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
