Draft Grade — Cowboys

FutureB-
The Cowboys left with their quarterback, and a D- to match. Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Cowboys spent pick No. 211 on Hayden Conner, a name most had 54 spots down the list. The process wobbled, and the D- is where it lands.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. So much rides on Jaxson Dart that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. It is not that Winston Jr. is a bad player; it is that the Cowboys had louder needs to answer first.
Leaving linebacker unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Warren falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Jaxson Dart
In the Round 1 slot they get a passer to set the clock by, a steep price for the projection. A real need, handled.
Pick14
Rnd1
Tetairoa McMillan
In pick No. 14 they get a go-to option on the outside. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick44
Rnd2
Tyler Warren
They barely believed it either: Tyler Warren still on the board at No. 44. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick45
Rnd2
Nick Emmanwori
Nick Emmanwori in slot 45 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick63
Rnd2
Cameron Williams
No drama and no debate, Cameron Williams went about where he belonged in pick 63. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick76
Rnd3
Deone Walker
A reach on Deone Walker in the 76th pick; the board had better options right there. It fills a real need, too.
Pick95
Rnd3
Savion Williams
Good price on Savion Williams in No. 95, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick98
Rnd3
Emery Jones Jr.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Emery Jones Jr. in pick 98, miles early. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick116
Rnd4
Kevin Winston Jr.
A surprising call. With linebacker still to address, they spent pick No. 116 on Kevin Winston Jr., a safety they were not short of.
Pick119
Rnd4
Damien Martinez
Damien Martinez at the 119th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick149
Rnd5
Tyler Shough
Tyler Shough in the 149th overall pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick153
Rnd5
Bhayshul Tuten
A straight-up fair deal on Bhayshul Tuten at the Round 5 slot, value and slot in agreement. The roster fit checks out.
Pick171
Rnd5
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
They paid up for Dont'e Thornton Jr. at slot 171 when waiting would have done the job. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick174
Rnd5
Ajani Cornelius
They paid sticker price for Ajani Cornelius in Round 5, Pick 36, and that is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick204
Rnd6
Nazir Stackhouse
They took Nazir Stackhouse at par in the Round 6 slot, which is nothing to complain about. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick211
Rnd6
Hayden Conner
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Hayden Conner. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick239
Rnd7
Brandon Adams
They talked themselves into Brandon Adams at slot 239, and the board did not agree. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick247
Rnd7
Kaden Prather
A real head-scratcher, Kaden Prather in No. 247 is miles ahead of his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
