Jz DRAFTING FOR THEPatriots
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall
B-
ValueB
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
The Patriots kept it disciplined and banked a B-. There is a lot to like until you notice edge rusher is still a hole. The Patriots never got to the one that mattered most. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.
Landing Klare that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. They are betting Payne proves the room right and everyone else wrong.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Sonny Styles
In No. 31 they get a sideline-to-sideline linebacker at a price that makes it sweeter. Need was not the driver here.
Pick63
Rnd2
Omar Cooper Jr.
They read the board right and Omar Cooper Jr. was the payoff at pick 63. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick95
Rnd3
Max Klare
They will replay Max Klare at slot 95 for years; that is how good the value is. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick125
Rnd4
Dametrious Crownover
Dametrious Crownover at pick No. 125 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It fills a real need, too.
Pick131
Rnd4
Gracen Halton
They went early on Gracen Halton in the Round 4 slot, and the value did not follow. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick171
Rnd5
VJ Payne
A big swing on VJ Payne at Round 5, Pick 31, well ahead of any board in the building. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick191
Rnd6
Jeff Caldwell
Jeff Caldwell at the 191st pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick198
Rnd6
Kaelon Black
They liked Kaelon Black enough to skip the value, taking him in the 198th overall pick. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick202
Rnd6
Ephesians Prysock
Nice patience on Ephesians Prysock, who had no business lasting to pick No. 202. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick212
Rnd6
Charles Demmings
Charles Demmings at the Round 6 slot is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick247
Rnd7
Trey Zuhn III
Nothing to complain about; Trey Zuhn III went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
