Buckshot DRAFTING FOR THECowboys

Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall
B-

FutureB-
A sensible, unshowy class lands the Cowboys a B-. You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Cowboys did exactly that with RJ Oben in the 149th pick. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.
That is a running back worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes.
Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball. A fair-value weekend of trading, no edge to be found.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick Analysis
Pick18
Rnd1
Matthew Golden
In the Round 1 slot they get a true top target, outstanding value to boot. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick46
Rnd2
Kaleb Johnson
A straight-up fair deal on Kaleb Johnson at pick No. 46, value and slot in agreement. The roster fit checks out.
Pick76
Rnd3
Carson Schwesinger
Fair-plus on Carson Schwesinger, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick82
Rnd3
Omarr Norman-Lott
They let Omarr Norman-Lott come to them and pounced at pick 82. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick118
Rnd4
Connor Colby
They reached a country mile for Connor Colby at No. 118, and the board is aghast. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick149
Rnd5
RJ Oben
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for RJ Oben. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick171
Rnd5
Quincy Riley
No drama and no debate, Quincy Riley went about where he belonged in the 171st overall pick. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick172
Rnd5
Kurtis Rourke
The board fumbled Kurtis Rourke all the way to slot 172, and they scooped it up. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick174
Rnd5
Luke Lachey
A wild overpay on Luke Lachey in pick No. 174, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick204
Rnd6
Jack Kiser
They barely believed it either: Jack Kiser still on the board at the 204th pick. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick211
Rnd6
JJ Pegues
They will replay JJ Pegues at Round 6, Pick 35 for years; that is how good the value is. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick239
Rnd7
John Williams
They paid a round early for John Williams in pick 239, more than the board wanted. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick247
Rnd7
Tahj Brooks
Circle this one: Tahj Brooks at No. 247 is a fall that decides a draft. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
