Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall
C
ValueB
NeedB+
TradesF
FutureB
The Cowboys lost the trade table, and the C tells the story. There is reaching, and then there is CJ Donaldson at the Round 7 slot. The Cowboys jumped the board by 82 and dared it to prove them wrong.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it.
However the rest shakes out, Golday at that price is a win they earned.
If Sonny Styles and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Mansoor Delane
In the Round 1 slot they get a potential shutdown corner. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick31
Rnd1
Sonny Styles
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Sonny Styles at the 31st overall pick is the proof. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick63
Rnd2
Emmanuel McNeil-Warren
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Emmanuel McNeil-Warren at No. 63. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick76
Rnd3
Jake Golday
Taking Jake Golday in pick No. 76 is close to grand larceny; an edge rusher that good had no business lasting this long. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick99
Rnd3
J.C. Davis
They reached a country mile for J.C. Davis at slot 99, and the board is aghast. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick112
Rnd4
Julian Neal
A clean, defensible pick in Round 4, Pick 12 with a little surplus value in Julian Neal. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick152
Rnd5
Chase Roberts
A conviction pick on Chase Roberts at pick No. 152 that the board grades a round light. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick177
Rnd5
Lander Barton
A reach on Lander Barton in No. 177; the board had better options right there. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick180
Rnd5
Zxavian Harris
Zxavian Harris at Round 5, Pick 40 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick221
Rnd7
CJ Donaldson
They reached into another round for CJ Donaldson, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick225
Rnd7
Zavion Thomas
They paid sticker price for Zavion Thomas in the 225th overall pick, and that is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
