Draft Grade — Rams

FutureB
A solid, sensible weekend for the Rams: B. The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Rams reached some 65 spots for Jaden Shirden, and value like that does not grow back. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
With interior defensive lineman unsolved, spending premium capital on cornerback is the choice that costs them. The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick Analysis
Pick22
Rnd1
Amarius Mims
In No. 22 they get a cornerstone up front at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick51
Rnd2
T.J. Tampa
A slide stopped in the Round 2 slot, with T.J. Tampa worth more than the price. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick83
Rnd3
Josh Newton
A want over a need in slot 83: Josh Newton adds a cornerback while interior defensive lineman keeps waiting.
Pick89
Rnd3
Tykee Smith
They jumped the gun on Tykee Smith, taking him earlier than his grade liked. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick97
Rnd3
Javon Solomon
A curious use of pick 97. Interior defensive lineman needed the pick; an OLB-EDGE in Javon Solomon did not.
Pick126
Rnd4
Jaheim Bell
Jaheim Bell in pick No. 126 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It fills a real need, too.
Pick156
Rnd5
Ty'Ron Hopper
Ty'Ron Hopper at pick No. 156 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick157
Rnd5
Keith Randolph Jr.
A tidy little value on Keith Randolph Jr. in slot 157, a step better than break-even. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick191
Rnd6
Javon Baker
The board had Javon Baker higher than No. 191, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick214
Rnd6
J.J. Weaver
They went early on J.J. Weaver in the 214th overall pick, and the value did not follow. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick216
Rnd6
Jalen Green
Fair-plus on Jalen Green, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick218
Rnd6
Trevor Keegan
A reach for Trevor Keegan in the Round 6 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick221
Rnd7
Phil Jurkovec
They paid a round early for Phil Jurkovec in the 221st pick, more than the board wanted. The roster fit checks out.
Pick241
Rnd7
Jaden Shirden
A wild overpay on Jaden Shirden in pick 241, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
