McCarthy is the Steelers' new face under center. Grade: B. The Steelers clearly saw something nobody else did in J.J. Weaver, taking him 196 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
Whatever J.J. McCarthy becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. The safety hole is the one line item this class does not answer. They banked enough surplus on Rouse to cover a lot of smaller sins.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick Analysis
Pick20
Rnd1
J.J. McCarthy
J.J. McCarthy in the 20th pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick57
Rnd2
Roman Wilson
Value with a capital V on Roman Wilson in slot 57, a genuine coup. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick92
Rnd3
Maason Smith
A big swing on Maason Smith at the 92nd overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick98
Rnd3
Curtis Jacobs
A real head-scratcher, Curtis Jacobs in pick No. 98 is miles ahead of his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick119
Rnd4
Justin Eboigbe
A wild overpay on Justin Eboigbe in No. 119, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick121
Rnd4
J.J. Weaver
J.J. Weaver at the Round 4 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick174
Rnd5
Jared Wiley
Jared Wiley at pick 174 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The roster fit checks out.
Pick178
Rnd6
Walter Rouse
A slide stopped in slot 178, with Walter Rouse worth more than the price. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick195
Rnd6
Delmar Glaze
A reasonable price with a little left over, Delmar Glaze in pick No. 195. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
