Draft Grade — Texans
Overall D
ValueB+ NeedB TradesF FutureD-
Best value of the weekend goes to the Texans for James: D.

The Texans lost the trade war and it was not close, handing partners the better end again and again. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D.

They will need McLachlan to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. James at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. The offensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.

It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake.

In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.

Pick Analysis
Pick23 Rnd1 Rome Odunze
In No. 23 they get a go-to option on the outside, outstanding value to boot. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick24 Rnd1 Jer'Zhan Newton
In the 24th overall pick they get a pocket-collapsing interior rusher at a price that makes it sweeter. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick25 Rnd1 Cooper DeJean
In pick 25 they get a sticky cover corner, and a steal at that. Need was not the driver here.
Pick59 Rnd2 Chris Braswell
Chris Braswell at the 59th pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick60 Rnd2 Edgerrin Cooper
Edgerrin Cooper at pick No. 60 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the linebacker. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick87 Rnd3 Trey Benson
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Trey Benson in the Round 3 slot. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick123 Rnd4 Malik Mustapha
A reach on Malik Mustapha in the Round 4 slot; the board had better options right there. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick164 Rnd5 DJ James
Taking DJ James in the 164th pick is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick239 Rnd7 Tanner McLachlan
Tanner McLachlan at slot 239 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
